ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
Landscape painting in the beautiful Hudson Valley
Students will spend two days working outdoors to complete a finished landscape painting.

Each morning we will have a group discussion followed by a short demonstration.
​
The goal is for students to complete at least one finished painting during the workshop and walk away with new strategies and techniques for completing paintings outdoors.

STUDIO LANDSCAPE WORKSHOP
ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
Learn how to create a landscape painting in the studio
Students will spend four days working in the studio and learn how to make an enlarged landscape painting from a plein air study.
​
Students will use previously completed paintings and imagination to create their finished landscape.
​
Matthew will paint along side students and demonstrate how to move elements to enhance composition, block in using color notes from your plein air study, create a sense of depth and more.

MATERIALS WORKSHOP
ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
Learn to grind paint, make canvases and mediums
Students will spend two days at the Firthcliffe Atelier hand making traditional oil painting materials.
​
During this course students will hand grind and tube a limited palette of oil colors, stretch and prime one 16x20 inch linen canvas, prime one 9x12 inch panel with homemade gesso and learn to make several different mediums.
​
The idea is for students to use these materials in the following still life workshop to create a completely handmade work of art

STILL-LIFE WORKSHOP
ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
Create a still -life painting using traditional materials and techniques
Students will learn to paint a still-life from start to finish. During the process you will create thumbnail sketches as well as a color study to help with the finished painting. You will learn about composition, color, paint application and more.
This course was originally designed to be a follow up to the materials workshop in June. Having students use their handmade canvases and hand ground paint to make a still-life painting. However those who didn't attend the material workshop are also welcome.
